It’s that time of the year, where we celebrate our collective Jewish narrative under the stars. This year, a team of creative folks at the Sukkah in the City project solicited visions of the sukkah reimagined
According to New York Magazine, the contest received 600 entries from 43 countries. Check out the entries online and see how people from all over reconceptualized the humble sukkah.
The driving ideas behind this contest could be a terrific project for Jewish learning in general: design a sukkah on paper, online, in a virtual world (a la the Synagogue in Second Life), in the physical world! Keep an eye out for future events… the oranizers are planning to expand this event next year. Contact sukkahcity@gmail.com if your community would like to be part of Sukkah City 2011.
Participate in this event, online and/or in person. Vote for your favorite design on New York Magazine’s website. Come gather at Union Square Park on Sunday and Monday (September 19th and 20th), from dusk to dawn, to experience the sukkot first hand.
But wait… there’s more! Like what you see? You can bid on one of the twelve finalist sukkot through an auction by Housing Works to benefit homelessness initiatives in New York City.
And check out their downloadable poster, a static version of their cool web design of how they showcased the rules. It”s a great conversation piece for your sukkah guests.
What are some of your favorite sukkot? How would you design a sukkah? Will you be at the event? Give a shout!
Wishing you a G’mar Hatimah Tovah!
